Blog Awards – because internet polls are so accurate and hard to game

by docweasel Jul 23 2007

This isn’t a sour grapes thing because we’ve never cared about appealing to the type of people who decide who gets in these award things anyway. Ours is a group blog where we all blog under one name, we are frequently belligerent with blogs on both sides, there is too much NSFW stuff, the entire format is too scattered and unfocused: serious stuff right next to questionable humor and fake news stories.

docweaselblog is fine with that. I’d hate to have to limit the site to pander to the powers that be so we can get a gif to display on the site saying we were nominated for a Bloggie. We’d never win because there’s no way anyone involved with this blog is going to ask people for votes, nor do we have an obsessed following of script kiddies or lifeless losers who will spend time stuffing the ‘ballot box’.

Now that we’ve gotten insulting ever winner ever out of the way;

Personally, I don’t think the awards are kind of unnecessary. I looked at the nominess: is Blackfive a “better” blog than Michael Yon, or vice-versa? Will either of them feel fulfilled if he beats the other? Its kind of stupid for blogs to compete.

Anyway, any newb knows you can game any internet election. Since there are righty and lefty blogs competing in the same categories, there’s always an “us against them” where DUers try to ballot stuff and Freepers do the same thing, voting just to deny the other team a win- they aren’t voting for blogs they visit daily and enjoy, they are just voting for “their” team.

I’m not just saying this because out blog has never, and is not likely to be, nominated (let alone win) in any category, ever. We certainly don’t run the blog to get awards.

Many of my favorite blogs aren’t even on the list, and some who are are competing. Is Anchoress a better writer than Althouse? Who knows. Who cares.

now this kind of stuff is exactly why we will never be nominated

I know the people who run these awards are sort of full of themselves, but I think the awards are a crock. A lot of the people who run them and “work so hard” setting them up and maintaining them are doing a lot of self-aggrandizement and self promotion, plus it drives a lot of hits their way.

Oscars, Grammies, all that crap is useless. I was reading recently that Waylon Jennings typically didn’t attend awards shows because he felt that musicians shouldn’t compete against one another. I feel the same way about bloggers. What’s the point?

It just seems like the organizers could make better use of their time. Everyone who works on the internet knows how stupidly invalid net polls of any kind are. Blogger awards are no different. They certainly have never been a gauge of quality, maybe popularity. If those were the same thing Kos would be a great writer.
