Good for Sgt Pepper and the triumph of white-bread music

It’s accompanied on that blog with a worshipful recapitulation of the song and it’s execrable history (I’ve heard it 1000 times and yet it still bores me).

I must take severe exception with John Jerkovich’s review of Harry Nilsson’s “PussyCats” album (produced by John Lennon)
Its one of my personal favs, but it isn’t just sentimentality or nostalgia for my youth, when I first bought the LP by the supremely talented but lamentably under-appreciated and unknown Nilsson (although the god-awful girl-flicks of the late nineties by Meg Ryan and Julia Roberts et al seem to be reviving some great Nilsson tunes for their soundtracks!).

I’m prompted to write this because of the death of George Harrison, but its been on my mind for years, actually. Of course, today is a very sad day. He will be missed. I’ve been a Beatles freak since I was a little kid, long after they had broken up I still knew they were the greatest band ever. No pop group has ever had such a profound effect no only on music, pop culture, movies, fashion and literature, but on much deeper things like the peace movement, philosophy and religion. I think George was always in the forefront. He did it in a very humble and self-effacing way. He held the first ever ‘star-studded benefit’, and did it in a way not to glamourize himself, but to play up the cause.

Paul’s nothing but consistent in his PR spin: just like his revisions of Beatles history, what might have been a reasonably amusing and informative program becomes another installment in The Gospel According to St. Paul.
Ed note: docweasel has been accused of being overly worshipful of St. Paul (see his review of McCartney’s live Tampa concert) so in the interest of balance, here is another opinion of the pretty Beatle and his works. This is a vintage review from the pre-website, lovingly reproduced here and coated with glucose.

Sparta’s EP Austere is very instrumental, artsy, and melodic. The songs are very emotional, but not “emo.”

This record is a dense, beautifully lush work of stunning depth and emotional anguish. I truly haven’t heard anything quite this beautiful since Ok Computer, and if you’ve heard that gem you’ll know that is quite a compliment.

The most entertaining track on the album has to be “PJ + Vincent & Matthew + Bjork”, which consists of a twisted pseudo-celebrity double-date over a slow cello line. Hearing an impression of Bjork telling us about her “erotic reawakening” is funny enough to make you squirt milk out your nose.

Forcing myself to listen to this album completely, without stopping once, was one of the hardest things I have ever done. The memory of listening to Untouchables will continue to haunt me to the day I die. I have now suffered for my sins.
Korn/Untouchables
Short Review : Don’t buy this CD. Don’t download it, don’t borrow a copy, don’t do anything with a connection to this CD. It is one of the worst CDs I have ever listened to.

You can tell its old, because she orders a program out of a magazine, and presumably waits for snail mail to get it to her weeks later.
That’s that thing where a man comes to your house with hard copies of emails and puts them in an actual metal box, instead of a virtual mailbox, for you youngsters in the audience.
See if this doesn’t describe your life.
From her album The Sensual World (1989), the lovely and intelligent Ms. Kate Bush:

Everything about KMFDM revolves around themes, from the artwork, to the 5 letter titles, to the way they mix up the member roster for each album. For ATTAK, It sounds as if the band threw some songs together and called it an album… I guess if I had to give this album a theme, it would be “Tim Skold’s guitars.”

The one aspect of the music on this album that’s an improvement over previous efforts is Geddy’s voice. Long gone are the high pitched shrieks of yore, now replaced by smooth, controlled vocals.

Beck proved that a guitar could replace vocals, and project just as much expression, soul, feeling and depth to carry an album. In fact, it melded more easily and distracted less from the other instrumentalists and guitar rhythm textures.

In my study of Nirvana’s music I have been most impressed that Cobain was a very rare type: an artist among popular musicians. While most professional musicians are proficient with their instruments, it is extremely rare that they have artistic sensitivity in either their musical composition or lyrics. Cobain had both. That he was a combination of both artist and popular musician necessitated that he be misunderstood. Consequently, as Generation X turned him into a product and piece of disposable entertainment they also succeeded in killing his spirit and will to live.

Jellyfish, the great little band that couldn’t. Why, with such a mastery of retro ’70s musicianship, sensibility, worldview and song-writing chops did this band fail to make a splash?
