After agonizing over what to add next (none of the comics we had on hand really excited us) we came into possession of some EC Comics classics, the big 3 horror series
Tales from the Crypt, Vault of Horror and Haunt of Fear. Lavishly illustrated by artists like Wallace Wood, Harvey Kurtzman (one of my personal favs), Jack Davis and Al Feldman all edited by the madman himself William M Gaines. These were the series put out the same publisher, William Gaines, who later changed the company over to Mad and satire instead of horror after the bluenose educators, clergy and congressmen cracked down on horror comics on the theory they caused delinquency. So died these 3 great titles, but we got Mad comic book satires for 23 issues until it morphed into a magazine format and changed focus from comics to satirizing Madison Avenue and modern culture and society.
Anyone would probably say that’s a fair trade, seeing as how Mad revolutionized humor and affected so many lives, and we still have all these issues of the Horror genre to enjoy. Reading through them, seems like the story lines were getting played out anyway. However, these are all pretty good.
We’ll have the other 2 series up soon.
As the man says, Ernjee!
