STORY
“Having disposed of the Wolf and established a thriving Port, the Emporer now bids you move inland and take command of a more important city with a yet more perilous mission.
There is constructed completely self-sufficient fortified city, enclosed in a formidable wall. The Emporer has requested 200 Bread to help feed his army. He has paid you 50,000 in Gold to fulfill this contract. Also, he will send you all the recruits you can arm to help you in your mission.
The problem is, the only arable land in the district is overgrown with Forest and in the center of an Invasion Zone. Your step-brother and former usurper of your crown, the Pig, is in control there, and demands 100 Suits of Armour, 200 Stone and 200 Pitch and he will cease his harassment of your citizens.
But there is another problem to that: the resources you need to pay his Blackmail are in hostile territory many leagues from your Stronghold. The Pig maintains small forts scattered over the area, and enemy troops roam freely between the Iron and Stone Mines and the Pitch Fields and your Castle. You will have to secure the area and send escorts to protect the workers while they travel back and forth. Unfortunately, Knights, the best armed escorts, require Armour, so you must balance your need for defense with the need to hoard Armour for the King.
DESCRIPTION
After fulfilling the Pig’s requirements (100 Suits of Armour, 200 Stone and 200 Pitch) the Invasions will cease and you can clear the forest, plant Wheat, mill Flour and make the 200 Loaves for the King.
The Wolf’s son, taking up his father’s mantle after you slayed the original Wolf, has established a farming community in the Valley, but has signed a Treaty of Neutrality. He seems to be honouring the treaty, but that may change in time, for he hungers to revenge his father’s death. As long as he does keep the peace, do not harass his people or attack him. Your own citizens, long used to the relative democracy and lenity the Emporer’s governors there have always maintained, may chafe under forced production quotas, so do not push them too hard.
You have 20 years to fulfill this quest.
“Bon Chance, Chevalier.”
NOTES
On construction-
This was started as an idea about irrigation, but it evolved into something else. Maybe in the future I’ll do something based around the irrigation idea. The home Castle is very compartmentalized and many services are more for aethetics than actual need. A more efficient player may want to knock down some services to free up peasants. Horses are provided, but Knights of course take Armour. You’ll have to weigh the benefits of Knights vs. the fact it will take some of the Armour you need to win.
I didn’t take an enormous amount of time on this, but it is pretty detailed and thought out and has been play-tested extensively. I was unable to beat it on Hard, but did eke out a win on Normal well before the deadline, so its possible on Very Hard, I would think.
Comments & criticism welcome. Thanks for checking this map out.
