The weather is Scotland in the Winter is brutally cold. It cuts through you like a knife, and it feels like you can never get warm. So it was when Melanie was growing up near the bogs, when burning peat was the only thing to keep their farmhouse heated.
Melanie liked to help her father on the farm and to say that she was a Daddy’s Girl was an understatement.
It all almost came to a sudden stop when the accident happened. Melanie’s scarf had got caught in the carriage wheels, because she hadn’t tied it like she had been told to many times. After the smoke had cleared, Melanie’s father lay dead on the ground and she had been disfigured severely.
There was no money for plastic surgery, so Melanie gamely told her Mother that she would run the farm after school to pay the bills and that she didn’t need surgery anyway.
