Katie Couric on Matt Lauer allegations: I had no idea
If all Couric had to say was that she didn’t know, why wait 5 weeks to say it? It just feels as if she spent those weeks calculating, coming up with the response that would play best and then rolling it out to a friendly media outlet not known for hard-hitting follow-up questions.
I’ve got a better one. I used to occasionally do a segment on a local news show. It was non-speaking, a friend and I did a musical number. But the point is anyone who goes on camera goes into make-up and hair. Every time I went in there the techs were talking about who was fucking who and who was flirting with who was drinking and who was on drugs and the entire gossip gamut. I didn’t know any of the people they were talking about, but the anchors were sometimes in there and regular on-camera people and they certainly knew because they took part in the gossip with gusto.
I don’t believe a network newscast or morning show is any different; it’s probably worse because the stakes are higher and the therefore the interest is higher. Everyone on the show on which I appeared seemed pretty informed about the private lives of the people on the show. The other thing was, it was very insular. I think they had much less interest if someone was fucking someone who WASN’T on the show, but if the affair was in-house, OMG it was relevant and known about and talked about.
Ask anyone in the biz if this isn’t true, since this occured to me I’ve talked to a few people I knew back then and they say of course Couric knew, she was powerful when she worked there, ppl would tell her shit to curry favor with her because everyone loves gossip and knowledge like that is power and Couric didn’t get where she was by not taking the main chance.
Someone powerful as Couric wouldn’t put up with NOT knowing what was going on on the show. It’s all interconnected.
