After several years of neglect, the docweasel.com site went down in February after a php update. In fact, all the sites on which I had adapted a theme called “Aqua” went down and there was no update or fix. I had to start with a new theme and recreate the look and feel of the old ones by css and html. docweaselband.com was relatively simple, and with help from the Wayback Machine I was able to get it up quickly using WP’s ‘twenty-twenty’ theme, I believe a good choice because it is well based and constantly updated, and all my customizations were done in the child theme so are unlikely to be over-written. Plus it was a very small site.

Haven’t posted in a while about the state of the site, but I’ve been working on it. Replicating the blog, from 2002 (and before!) to 2017 was a chore. In 2002 the blog was just an shtml site with weekly (or so) updates.

If you want to comment on any of the posts on dwb join dwf forum. We don’t have time to police the comments here for spam and trolls. The way the internet works, you get blamed for the comments, so you either have to censor them or you have to live with their stink on you. Instead, if you want to have your say, join the forum and post whatever stench you like. Since you have to join to read, no one can link hateful comments and try to pin them on us to the general public.

Went off on a tangent and abandoned Doom for a minute and threw up a new forum. Took a long time to set all the styles (very poor theme system neccessitated by-passing it and customizing styles, hundres of them). Doesn’t have the features of a php or perl board but shouldn’t be near the problems the old ones were, tehy are a full-time job just keeping online. Anyway, let’s see if anyone notices or comes back.

Redmeat was relatively painless, the only problem being every year the images are named according to the date they cam e out, meaning no 2 years are the same, so I had to correlate between the coding links and the actual files, but it only took a few hours and now comix is done. In the meantime, a friend has sent me more FFF stuff, but a lot of it is redundant (the fat freddie’s cat stuff mostly came from existing FFF comics) so I don’t know if I’ll mess iwth that. Cherries Jubilee 4 issues still has to be done, but that can wait.

Good couple of weeks, the MP stuff is in the rear-view now, might revisit in the future but would have to be very driven to do so, there is much more there than ever was on the original shtml site, we had none of the albums, no Live at Hollywood Bowl. The Meaning of Life DVD had just come out at the time and we did the transcription together as a group with one poor intern trying to type everyone’s interpretations without pausing the movie (we just watched it numerous times and fixed each time.)

Anyway, that’s all done for now and on to the comics, which went rather quick, other than the scanning, which was brutal. Then the color correction, resizing, thumbnailing, watermarking and coding the pages. Rather than dribble them out I just put them all online at once.

FFF and Cherry are about done today, might get on to RedMeat, which is a risk as its a going concern and there don’t seem to be any other repositories complete online. As such, it wouldn’t be worthwhile to spend a great deal of time on them. We’ll see. Maybe limit searches and rely on people stumbling on them?

We started docweasel.com in 1996 (!) first as site for a band, then it morphed into a giant thing with a staff of over a dozen by 2001, writing humor, music and movie reviews, a webcomic, monty python scripts and various underground comix and some tits.

By 2006 we had a burgeoning forum with thousands (hundreds really active) of members and 200k hits a day. Other things got in the way and people left and were not replaced until only 3 of us were really contributing, and then in about 2012 the forum broke and I never bothered to fix it and the site really nose-dived. No updates, no weekly articles or humor, just occasional blogging about some subject that interested one of us.

From about 2012 to Aug 2017 the site was almost unupdated except a blog post every few weeks.

Then dotster sends some official mail to the doc@docweasel.com site claiming we had too many files, and even though we had an unlimited storage account we still had many more than the typical site so we had to remove some. Even though we had unlimited storage. Too many files.

That’s it for all the pages full of thumbnails, a most annoying format for reading comics. However, how you can’t save them as easily, perhaps we’ll come up with a way of doing that, a zip or a pdf. But for now we have a much easier to read format, a full page slider for all 14 Fab Furry Freak Bros, all 22 Cherry Poptart and all 26 Omaha the Cat Dancers.
