
Fun on the Bus

Cairo, Illinois, is a sad place. It really feels deserted. The population is about 3000 which sounds like a good round number, but the city was built to handle a population five times larger. The buildings are still there, large stone banks, churches, and government buildings; beautiful in design, but with their promise unfulfilled. They look sad standing still abandoned. It’s the saddest city in the world.
My name is Natalie..Natalie Wood. Yes I know that it’s the same as that famous movie actress but I’m not a pretty girl. At least not in my eyes, and certainly not as pretty as she was. The boys used to tease me with, ‘When nobody would, Natalie would’, but really I wouldn’t.
My Mom had a hard time supporting us since my Father died from that accident you read about in the newspapers and with no insurance, so she decided to put me on a bus when I was 12, by myself, to go and live with my Grandma down in Montgomery, Alabama.
