While I do not ascribe to “identity” politics, I think that there is value in symbolism as a message that governments and parties are inclusive and believe in eglatarianism.

Clarence Thomas, in all reality, probably was not the best and most qualified candidate, but its a very powerful statement that the only black member of the court is a Republican appointee, just as the fact that honor of naming the first woman on the court will always go to the Republicans. Sometimes statements like these are necessary, fair and the right thing to do. Its time for women on national tickets, and not just tokenism.

On a side note, I guess this is the election where we put the “governors always beat senators” to rest. Richardson, Romney, Huckabee all fell by the wayside to senators.

Everything is a rule until its not, I guess.

Hopefully, now all the ABM haters will stop the exercise in futility, recognize McCain as the nominee and get behind him, and start fighting the next fight which really matters: the Vice Presidency. That’s doubtful, because based on their thought processes in the past month most of them aren’t very intelligent. Still, we can always hope.

As Republicans have shown, they like to nominate the heir presumptive, which, if McCain’s ticket wins, his VP will be. McCain will be quite old in ’12 and might not run again. So, its EXTREMELY important who he picks.

The Michigan primary is only notable for one thing: if Romney wins, by however slim a margin, he will use this bit of trivia to justify staying in the race. Its his home state, his father was a popular governor there, he should win it in a walk. His team is now down-playing expectations because it’s far from certain he will win at all, and if he does it will probably be close.
